Caring for Your Cut Flower Bouquet
Properly caring for your cut flower bouquet is key in keeping those blooms fresh for as long as possible. Here are some steps that we recommend:
1. Use a clean container (super clean). A vase with some dried out goo in the bottom from last time won't be kind to your fresh flowers.
2. Snip about 1/2 inch off the bottom of the stems. When you get your flowers from me, they've been off the plant for less than 24 hours, but its still good practice to make a fresh edge on the bottom of that stem.
3. FILL your container with water. Some of these guys drink a LOT of water and you don't want anyone getting thirsty.
4. Strip off any extra foliage that might be below the water line in your vase. Foliage sitting in the water will begin to rot and will then cause your flowers to rot as well.
5. Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. If you're getting flowers from me, its summertime in Nebraska, so we should be covered with the heat source.
6. Keep your flowers away from fresh fruit - aging fruit releases ethylene and that will cause your flowers to dwindle faster as well.
7. Refresh water often (daily). Clean water looks better in a clear vase, but don't let your flowers drink anything you wouldn't want to be drinking and they'll be much happier.
8. Use flower food if you can. Chances are your bouquet was sent home with a small packet of flower food. If not, you can find Cut Flower Food recipes online using simple pantry items that will work just the same.
You can find our seasonal bouquets every Saturday morning at the Gretna Farmers' Market located in downtown Gretna, Nebraska and at the occasional pop-up event. You can find pop-up events on our Facebook page when we have them.
